The Problems Caused By Chewing Gum In Ireland

Ireland has decided to scrap plans for a chewing gum tax after manufacturers, including Wrigley, pledged €7 million to a campaign fund aimed at reducing litter from chewing gum and chewing gum wrappers.
They are also planning on doing the same in the UK.

In return chewing gum makers will spend €6 million on an anti-litter education campaign and €1 million on a research programme aimed at making gum less difficult to clean.

Many schools in Ireland are faced with the massive problem of chewing gum disposel. The underneeth of tables and chairs in classrooms are platsered with chewed chewing gum. this is disgusting not only because it gets stuck to other students but it also spreads germs. Schools were forever buying new tables and chairs but now they have come up with banning chewing from schools and punishments can be handed out if a pupil is caught chewing gum and if they are caught with chewing gum in their posession. i think this is a good idea even though i love chewing gum but i think it is the only way to prevent students from disposing of their chewing gum incorrectly.

Benifits of Chewing gum

Chewing gum is a confectionery product which provides a good taste over a long period of time and provides a number of benefits, breath freshening, dental benefits and tooth whitening. It also helps people concentrate, eases stress, reduces dry mouth, is a low-calorie snack and helps people to stop smoking.

When chewing gum your mouth produces saliva, which helps neutralize acids from foods that may cause tooth decay.
Chewing sugar-free gum has been shown to stimulate the production of saliva by up to ten times the normal rate. Saliva neutralises plaque acid in the mouth and helps reduce the risk of dental caries by up to 40%. The saliva also helps repair early dental lesions through remineralisation of the tooth’s surface. Dental professionals recommend sugar-free gum as an aid to oral health and to prevent tooth decay.
A UK study by the University of York Health Economics Consortium investigating the economic impact of chewing sugarfree gum concluded that if the entire British population chewed sugarfree gum, the National Health Service (NHS) could save over £100 million per year on dental care.

Chewing gum is a popular food rich in sugar which is originally made from chicle, which is a natural gum from Manilkara chicle, which is a tropical evergreen tree native to central America. it grows in rainforrests here because the climate and rain fall makes the perfect conditions for it to grow. Chicle is not found growing in many other places. Wrigley company still a prominent user of this material, today there are only a few companies that still make chewing gum from natural chicle. This is because by the 1960s chicle was replaced butadiene-based synthetic rubber, which was cheaper to manufacture.
